State Bank of India (SBI), India's largest lender, is setting ambitious targets for its financial growth, with plans to mobilize $10 billion through Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) or FCNR(B) deposits. Chairman C.S. Setty confirmed at a recent media briefing that the bank has already secured $6 billion, with the remaining $4 billion expected in the coming months.
These FCNR(B) deposits are crucial for strengthening SBI's foreign currency resources and supporting its broader funding requirements. The strong response from overseas Indians to the bank's foreign currency deposit schemes highlights their confidence in the institution.
Domestic Growth Projections
Beyond its international deposit efforts, SBI has also outlined robust domestic business projections. The bank expects a credit growth rate of 14-15% for the financial year 2026-27. This growth is anticipated across various segments, including retail lending, corporate loans, and other key sectors, indicating sustained demand for credit within the economy.
Complementing its credit expansion, SBI projects a deposit growth of 10-11% during the same fiscal year. This aligns with the bank's strategic funding approach, ensuring a balanced increase in both assets and liabilities.
Strategic Deposit Management
Despite intense competition for deposits across the Indian banking sector, Chairman Setty emphasized that SBI will not aggressively price bulk deposits. This strategy reflects the bank's commitment to maintaining a balanced cost of funds while continuing to attract deposits through its extensive retail network rather than by offering significantly higher interest rates for large-ticket deposits.
SBI's comprehensive outlook comes as banks navigate a complex environment, balancing increasing credit demand with funding needs, all while striving to maintain healthy margins amidst evolving interest rate and liquidity conditions. The planned increase in FCNR(B) deposits is expected to provide valuable additional foreign currency liquidity, further bolstering the bank's overall funding profile.
