Sanjay Raut Blasts Trump's Bengal Election Congrats to Modi

· · 2 min read

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut criticized former US President Donald Trump for congratulating PM Modi on the West Bengal election results. Raut alleged 'fear and intimidation' marred the polls, urging Trump to adopt a 'more informed view' of India's internal democratic process.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut has publicly criticized former US President Donald Trump for his congratulatory remarks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the recent West Bengal Assembly election results. Raut, writing to Trump on May 8, expressed his concern over the external endorsement of what he described as an “internal matter of India’s federal democracy,” labeling it as “premature and misplaced.”

In his communication, shared via social media, the Rajya Sabha MP highlighted serious allegations surrounding the conduct of the West Bengal polls. Raut claimed that the electoral process was characterized by an atmosphere of “fear, intimidation, and systemic pressure.” He further suggested widespread perceptions that the Election Commission had not acted impartially, with its actions appearing to favor the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Concerns Over Electoral Integrity

Raut's letter specifically questioned the deployment of central forces during the elections, arguing that their presence fostered “coercion rather than confidence” among voters. He reinforced concerns raised by other opposition leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, stating that doubts about the fairness of the electoral process represented a “broader unease” that should not be overlooked.

“Democracy is not just about elections — it is about ensuring they are free, fair, and credible. When serious allegations arise, they warrant scrutiny, not celebration,” Raut wrote, urging Trump to take a “more informed and balanced view” of the situation before offering congratulations.

The controversy arises amidst an escalating political debate over the West Bengal election outcome. Opposition parties have accused the ruling party of misusing state institutions and machinery, charges that the BJP has consistently dismissed as baseless and politically motivated.

Trump's Previous Remarks

Trump had previously congratulated Prime Minister Modi on what the White House had termed a “historic and decisive” victory in West Bengal. This victory saw the BJP reportedly secure power from the Trinamool Congress, ending its 15-year rule and marking a significant electoral breakthrough for the BJP in eastern India. White House spokesperson Kush Desai also noted that during a phone conversation last month, Trump expressed admiration for Modi, remarking that India was “lucky” to have him as its leader.
