Researchers in Thiruvananthapuram have developed an innovative, low-cost mobile workstation designed to improve hygiene and working conditions for roadside fish vendors. Priced at just ₹3,500, this patented design offers a practical solution for informal workers.

A groundbreaking academic project from Thiruvananthapuram has yielded a practical, low-cost solution set to revolutionize roadside fish vending. A team of researchers has developed covered mobile workstations that promise to enhance comfort, hygiene, and working conditions for thousands of informal sector workers, predominantly women.

Innovation Secures Patent

This innovative design has already secured a design patent, paving the way for potential technology transfer and commercial production. The project began not in a studio, but with extensive fieldwork aimed at understanding the real-world challenges faced by fish vendors.

Research-Driven Design Process

The initiative stemmed from an MSc Home Science project by Kavya Vijayan, guided by Associate Professor Sithara Balan V. The team conducted an initial survey of 500 vendors in Thiruvananthapuram, followed by an in-depth study of 150 individuals to collect precise body-measurement data. This data, including standing height, shoulder height, elbow height, arm reach, and hip breadth, was crucial to ensure the workstation was ergonomically tailored to its users' needs.

Karthik Mohan, Assistant Professor in Architecture, along with BArch students Adhil Jomy and Panjami S, collaborated on the workstation's development.

Key Features and Ergonomics

The workstation boasts several thoughtful features:

  • Mobility: The lightweight structure, weighing under 100 kg, is mounted on wheels for easy relocation.
  • Security: Front and rear sections can be opened during business hours and securely locked when not in use.
  • Ventilation: Ventilated sides ensure adequate airflow.
  • Comfort: An ergonomic reclining chair helps reduce strain on vendors who often sit for long hours.
  • Hygiene: It includes a dedicated platform for displaying fish and separate, removable compartments for fish waste and wastewater, significantly improving cleanliness.

Affordable and Sustainable

Built with sustainable and recyclable materials, the workstation is designed to be highly cost-effective. A basic version can reportedly be produced for approximately ₹3,500. An upgraded model, featuring a solar panel and additional functionalities, can be built for under ₹6,000.

The solar panel option is a significant enhancement, capable of powering a small fan or even a mini-refrigerator for several hours, making long workdays in the open more manageable and improving fish preservation.

Broader Impact and Future Outlook

The team believes the design patent will facilitate the transition of this academic concept into widespread practical application for vendors. This two-and-a-half-year interdisciplinary project exemplifies how academic research can directly contribute to livelihood-focused solutions for the informal sector.

Researchers are now actively seeking industry partners for technology transfer and large-scale production, hoping to transform this prototype into a tool that enhances both the dignity and daily working conditions of roadside fish sellers across the region.
