Mumbai, India – RPG Group chairman Harsh Goenka announced Thursday that his conglomerate is implementing strict austerity measures, including significant cuts to foreign travel and a push for greater work-from-home adoption, in direct response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for responsible resource utilization.
Goenka shared an internal directive across the RPG Group, emphasizing the need for companies to curtail both international and domestic air travel to the absolute minimum. The directive also strongly encourages employees to work remotely wherever feasible, aligning with existing group policies on flexible work arrangements.
Responding to National Call Amid Global Pressures
In a public statement on X (formerly Twitter), Goenka wrote, "We in RPG have responded to our PM's call with austerity and responsible resource allocations. I hope other corporates will follow suit." This initiative comes after Prime Minister Modi urged citizens and businesses earlier this week to reduce fuel consumption, postpone non-essential foreign travel, and adopt work-from-home practices to help conserve foreign exchange.
The prime minister's appeal is set against a backdrop of increasing global uncertainty and pressure on the Indian rupee, exacerbated by rising crude oil prices. The ongoing conflict in Iran has contributed to these price hikes, significantly impacting India's import bill and foreign exchange outflows. India imports nearly 85% of its oil requirements, making the nation particularly vulnerable to international crude price fluctuations.
New Directives for RPG Group Companies
The internal group-wide directive issued by Goenka outlined several key areas for immediate action:
- Foreign Travel: To be curtailed to the absolute minimum.
- Domestic Air Travel: Should be significantly reduced.
- Intercity Conferences & Meetings: Avoid or minimize any meetings requiring intercity travel.
- Work From Home: All employees who can work from home should be actively encouraged to do so, in line with the Group’s Remote Working Policy.
- Virtual Collaboration: Internal reviews, interviews, and routine meetings are to be conducted virtually to the greatest extent possible.
- Sustainable Transport: Encourage the use of electric and hybrid vehicles for future company-owned or leased cars, and promote carpooling and public transport.
RPG Group is not alone in responding to the Prime Minister's call. Shaadi.com CEO Anupam Mittal also announced a mandatory weekly work-from-home day for his employees, signaling a broader corporate response to the national conservation effort.
Economic Context: Oil Prices and Foreign Exchange
The government's push for austerity and resource conservation is a strategic move to mitigate the economic impact of elevated global crude oil prices. By reducing non-essential foreign travel and fuel consumption, India aims to ease the pressure on its foreign exchange reserves and import bill, which are critical for the nation's economic stability.
These measures underscore a collective effort to navigate challenging global economic conditions and reinforce India's financial resilience.
