Rooftop Solar Emerges as Wealth Creation Asset with High Returns, Experts Say

· · 3 min read

Rooftop solar installations are increasingly viewed as a long-term financial asset, offering attractive returns and shielding households and businesses from rising electricity tariffs. Experts highlight their role in enhancing property values and delivering significant savings over decades.

Rooftop solar technology is transforming from a mere power-saving solution into a significant wealth-creation asset, according to industry experts. Beyond the immediate benefit of lower electricity bills, these systems are now recognized for their potential to generate attractive financial returns, increase property value, and provide long-term protection against escalating energy costs.

Beyond Bill Savings: A Financial Asset

The most direct advantage of rooftop solar remains the reduction in electricity expenses. Once installed, solar panels produce power throughout the day, decreasing reliance on grid electricity. With a typical lifespan exceeding 20 years and minimal maintenance requirements, the accumulated savings on utility bills can comfortably surpass the initial installation cost over the system's lifetime.

A crucial financial benefit is the insulation from rising electricity tariffs. Utility prices consistently increase due to factors like higher fuel costs, infrastructure investments, and growing demand. By generating a substantial portion of their own electricity, homes and businesses can reduce their vulnerability to these increases, gaining greater certainty over their long-term energy expenditures.

India's Growing Solar Market

The shift towards viewing rooftop solar as an investment is bolstered by India's rapidly expanding market. Government incentives, more accessible financing options, and increasing awareness of the economic advantages of on-site power generation are all contributing factors. Sudharman Ezhil, Director and CEO of Natrinai Ventures (NGE Green Energy), noted this changing perception.

"For years, rooftop solar was sold as a way to cut power bills. That conversation is shifting. Consumers and businesses are beginning to treat it as a long-term financial asset—one that starts yielding from the day it is commissioned," Ezhil stated.

According to Ezhil, India's rooftop solar additions reached 7.1 GW in 2025, more than doubling from 3.2 GW in the previous year, pushing the cumulative installed capacity beyond 20 GW. Residential installations, significantly spurred by initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar scheme, accounted for nearly three-quarters of these new additions.

Compelling Returns for Businesses

For commercial and industrial users, the economic case for rooftop solar is even stronger. Ezhil explained that businesses can typically recover their initial investment within four to five years. After this payback period, the system continues to generate electricity at minimal cost for almost two decades. The effective returns can range from the mid-teens to the mid-twenties, often outperforming traditional investment vehicles such as fixed deposits or commercial rental yields.

Ezhil emphasized that rooftop solar should be considered an infrastructural asset that strengthens balance sheets while reducing exposure to tariff volatility.

Long-Term Wealth Creation and Property Value

Pawan Garg, Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Fujiyama Power Systems, echoed the sentiment that rooftop solar has evolved beyond mere energy savings into a wealth-creating asset.

"In the past, the most notable benefit of rooftop solar was energy savings. While this aspect is still integral, rooftop solar has become a wealth-creating asset that provides a positive return on investment and defends against the increasing cost of energy," Garg commented.

Garg highlighted that cumulative savings over a solar system's lifespan can significantly exceed its installation cost, especially with government subsidies and financing support. Furthermore, solar installations can boost property values, as buyers increasingly prioritize energy-efficient and sustainable homes and commercial buildings.

Beyond financial gains, rooftop solar contributes to greater energy independence by reducing reliance on the conventional electricity grid. As adoption continues to grow, experts predict that rooftop solar will be increasingly recognized not as an expense, but as a strategic, long-term investment that delivers consistent savings and supports India's transition to clean energy.
