Restore Inoperative PAN: Link Aadhaar Online with ₹1,000 Fee

· · 3 min read

If your Permanent Account Number (PAN) has become inoperative due to non-linking with Aadhaar, you can reactivate it by completing the online linking process. A fee of ₹1,000 is required to restore full functionality and avoid higher taxes.

For millions of taxpayers in India, a Permanent Account Number (PAN) is crucial for financial transactions and tax compliance. However, if your PAN is not linked with your Aadhaar number, it becomes inoperative, leading to significant inconveniences and financial penalties. The Income Tax Act, 1961, mandates this linking for eligible individuals, and while the initial deadline has passed, taxpayers can still reactivate their inoperative PANs by following an online process and paying a prescribed fee of ₹1,000.

Who Needs to Link PAN with Aadhaar?

The PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory for individuals who were allotted a PAN on or before July 1, 2017. This also applies to those who initially obtained a PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID and subsequently need to update their actual Aadhaar number. However, certain categories are exempt from this requirement:

  • Residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya.
  • Non-residents as per the Income Tax Act.
  • Individuals aged 80 years or above during the relevant previous year.

Consequences of an Inoperative PAN

An inoperative PAN can lead to several complications for taxpayers. The most immediate impact is the delay or non-issuance of income tax refunds until the PAN is made operative again. During this period, no interest will be paid on delayed refunds, resulting in a financial loss.

Additionally, taxpayers with an inoperative PAN may face higher rates for Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS), making their tax compliance more expensive. This can affect various transactions, including bank deposits, property sales, and other financial dealings.

Preparing for the Linking Process

Before initiating the PAN-Aadhaar linking process, ensure you have the following details readily available:

  • Your valid PAN number.
  • Your valid Aadhaar number.
  • A mobile number linked with your Aadhaar for OTP authentication.
