Former Union Minister and entrepreneur Rajeev Chandrasekhar recently recounted the challenging beginnings of his entrepreneurial journey. He revealed the significant risk he undertook at the age of 27 to establish one of India's pioneering wireless cellular networks.
In 1991, Chandrasekhar made the pivotal decision to leave his career at Intel, choosing instead to pursue entrepreneurship. His ambition was to build a wireless cellular network and associated companies within India, a venture met with considerable skepticism.
Facing Skepticism and Doubt
Chandrasekhar's bold move was not universally supported, even within his own family. He recalled being told he would not succeed, with many questioning how a young entrepreneur, without the backing of an established business dynasty like Hinduja, Tata, Birla, or Ambani, could thrive in the nascent telecom sector. He learned to expect and overcome constant rejections.
Despite the formidable challenges, Chandrasekhar was resolute in his vision. He aimed to construct a large cellular network by leveraging Indian talent, drawing expertise from the defense and telecom sectors, rather than relying on expensive expatriate specialists.
Inspiration from Neil Armstrong
During this demanding period, a unique encounter provided significant inspiration for Chandrasekhar and his team. He invited Neil Armstrong, the first human to walk on the Moon, to Mumbai. Armstrong spoke about his experiences and the complexities involved in undertaking ambitious engineering projects, leaving an indelible mark on Chandrasekhar's team.
This experience encouraged his team to embrace audacious engineering challenges and take calculated risks. Chandrasekhar credits this inspiration as a driving force behind what he describes as building “India’s first tech unicorn,” a journey that paved the way for a broader career in semiconductors, technology, and media.
