PVR Inox to Launch Affordable 'Smart Cinema' Halls in Smaller Indian Towns

· · 2 min read

India's largest multiplex chain, PVR Inox, plans to open 300 'Smart Cinema' halls in smaller towns over three years. Tickets will be capped at ₹189 to serve previously underserved markets and drive new growth.

India's leading multiplex operator, PVR Inox, has announced ambitious plans to launch a new network of affordable cinema halls targeting smaller towns across the country. Dubbed 'Smart Cinema', these new venues will offer movie tickets capped at ₹189, a significant reduction designed to make cinema accessible to a broader audience.

Expanding Reach with 'Smart Cinema'

The company aims to establish 300 'Smart Cinema' halls over the next three years in towns such as Muzaffarpur, Barrackpore, and Hanumangarh. This expansion strategy is driven by the belief that the next wave of growth will emerge from these aspirational smaller towns, where demand for entertainment facilities akin to those in larger cities is high.

Executive Director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli stated that the affordable pricing model is sustainable due to lower operational costs in smaller towns, including reduced expenses for land, capital expenditure, electricity, and manpower. The 'Smart Cinema' halls will operate on a franchise model, with partners owning the theatres and PVR Inox managing operations.

Affordable Entertainment and Diversified Offerings

In addition to lower ticket prices, the new cinemas will offer a more streamlined food and beverage menu, featuring popular items like popcorn and nachos at reduced rates. This approach aims to keep the overall entertainment experience budget-friendly for patrons.

PVR Inox's strategy extends beyond just traditional movie screenings. The company is actively diversifying its revenue streams to reduce dependence on box-office collections. Plans include adding approximately 150 regular screens annually over the next three to four years and exploring new attractions like photo booths and virtual reality games within multiplexes to enhance visitor engagement.

Furthermore, PVR Inox is expanding its alternative programming. Last year, events such as sports screenings, concert broadcasts, TED Talks, devotional gatherings, and corporate board meetings generated 1.2 million admissions, with a projected 10% growth this year. This multi-faceted approach underscores PVR Inox's commitment to innovation and broader market penetration.
