The Punjab government has successfully resolved a two-month-long strike by its Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) employees, announcing an agreement that addresses their key demands. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema confirmed on Wednesday, July 30, 2026, that the state had accepted genuine requests concerning remuneration, service conditions, contractual tenure, and the migration to the new Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM G) framework.
The agreement marks an end to the statewide agitation that began in May 2026, when Punjab MGNREGA employees initiated a strike demanding better pay, secure service conditions, and clarity on their transition to the Centre's new rural employment framework. The VB-G RAM G scheme officially replaced MGNREGA nationwide from July 1, 2026.
State Government Commits to Employee Welfare
Minister Cheema stated that the government believes in resolving issues through dialogue and consensus. "Today's agreement reflects our commitment to employee welfare as well as our resolve to strengthen rural development by ensuring the smooth implementation of the VB-G RAM G programme across Punjab," he said. He further emphasized the government's dedication to protecting employee interests while maintaining efficient public service delivery.
Union Welcomes Decision, Calls Off Strike
Representatives from the MGNREGA/VB-G RAM G employees' union welcomed the government's decision. They expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond for addressing their long-standing issues. Following the announcement, the union declared the immediate withdrawal of their strike and pledged full cooperation in the implementation of rural development programs throughout Punjab.

The transition from MGNREGA to VB-G RAM G has been a critical point of contention for employees, who sought assurances regarding their job security and terms under the new framework.
