PM Modi Launches India's First Hydrogen Train on Jind-Sonipat Route

· · 2 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India's first hydrogen-powered passenger train on the Jind-Sonipat route, marking a new era for clean rail technology. He also inaugurated development projects worth Rs 14,700 crore across Haryana and Punjab.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train, setting a new global benchmark for sustainable rail transport. The launch took place at Jind railway station in Haryana, where the Prime Minister flagged off the 10-coach train destined for Sonipat. This initiative is part of a broader visit during which PM Modi also unveiled multiple development projects across Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab.

India's Landmark Hydrogen Train

The newly launched hydrogen train represents a significant leap for indigenous clean-rail technology. Designed, engineered, and integrated entirely in India, the 10-coach formation is reportedly the largest-capacity hydrogen train currently in operation worldwide, capable of carrying approximately 2,600 passengers. It utilizes a 3,200-horsepower propulsion system coupled with advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity, producing only water vapor as a byproduct.

Unlike traditional electric trains that rely on overhead electrification, this hydrogen-powered set generates its own electricity onboard, making it ideal for non-electified routes. Officials highlighted the robust safety systems integrated into the train, including multi-layer detectors for hydrogen leaks, heat, flames, and smoke. A dedicated hydrogen refuelling facility has been established at Jind to support the train's operations.

With this launch, India joins a select group of nations, including Germany, Japan, China, and the United States, that operate hydrogen-powered trains, further cementing its position in advanced green technology.

Major Development Projects Unveiled

Following the train's inauguration, Prime Minister Modi proceeded to Eklavya Stadium in Jind, where he laid the foundation stone and dedicated several development projects to the nation. These projects, valued at approximately Rs 14,700 crore, encompass various sectors aimed at boosting regional infrastructure and economy. Of this total, projects worth over Rs 4,700 crore are allocated for Haryana alone.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to visit Jalandhar, Punjab, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for additional projects totaling over Rs 5,470 crore. These comprehensive development initiatives underscore the government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and promoting economic growth across multiple states.
