PM Modi Halves Convoy Size Amid Austerity Drive, Boosts EV Use

· · 2 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mandated a 50% reduction in his official convoy size as part of a broader government austerity push. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is implementing the directive, which also encourages greater use of electric vehicles without new purchases.

New Delhi – In a significant move signaling a wider government austerity drive, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed a 50% reduction in the number of vehicles comprising his official convoy. The directive, issued on May 13, 2026, comes amid an ongoing push to conserve resources and promote efficiency across government operations.

Security Protocols and Implementation

Sources familiar with the development indicate that the Special Protection Group (SPG), responsible for the Prime Minister's security, has already begun implementing these revised instructions. Crucially, the changes are being made while strictly adhering to the mandatory security guidelines outlined in the 'Blue Book', ensuring no compromise on the Prime Minister's protection.

Beyond the reduction in vehicle count, Prime Minister Modi has also called for an increased presence of electric vehicles (EVs) within the convoy. This transition, however, will be achieved through strategic deployment of existing government EVs rather than the procurement of new ones, further underscoring the focus on cost-efficiency.

Broader Austerity Measures Across Government

This initiative is part of a broader government-wide effort to save fuel and reduce expenditure. Multiple ministries are expected to introduce similar measures. Following the Prime Minister's lead, several Chief Ministers in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan have already issued directives to reduce the size of their own convoys. Additionally, Union Minister C.R. Patil has publicly announced his decision to forgo an escort vehicle, setting another example of the austerity push.

The emphasis on public transport has also gained traction, with Union Minister Ramdas Athawale recently seen utilizing the Mumbai metro. He urged citizens to embrace public transit as a means to conserve fuel.

Economic Context and Public Appeal

These austerity measures are unfolding against a backdrop of global oil market volatility, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had called for a range of conservation efforts, including encouraging work-from-home arrangements, limiting non-essential foreign travel, reducing purchases of gold, and cutting down on the consumption of petroleum products and kitchen essentials.

He has also advocated for increased use of metro rail services in cities, carpooling, greater adoption of electric vehicles, and leveraging railway services for parcel movement, urging both government bodies and the public to contribute to national resource conservation.
