PM Modi Boosts Ladakh: New Leh Airport Terminal & ₹3,350 Cr Projects Inaugurated

· · 2 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated five key development projects worth ₹3,350 crore in Ladakh, including a new Leh Airport terminal and a strategic road. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity, energy, water, and heritage conservation in the Union Territory.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually dedicated five significant development projects, valued at approximately ₹3,350 crore, to the nation in Ladakh. These initiatives encompass critical areas such as airport infrastructure, road connectivity, renewable energy, heritage preservation, and water security, designed to bolster everyday services and foster long-term growth in the Union Territory.

Leh Airport Terminal Upgrade

A cornerstone of the new projects is the passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. Constructed at a cost of ₹640 crore, this upgraded terminal is expected to significantly enhance the passenger experience and support Ladakh's burgeoning tourism sector and air travel demands.

Strategic Road Connectivity

Among the crucial infrastructure developments, PM Modi also dedicated the 298-kilometer Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road. Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), this road establishes a vital link between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, promising improved access within the challenging high-altitude terrain. Officials highlighted its importance for both civilian travel and strategic mobility, especially in a region where road access is often limited for much of the year.

Renewable Energy and Water Security

The energy sector received a substantial boost with the inauguration of the 9-MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66-kV double-circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi transmission line. These projects are set to improve electricity supply and harness Ladakh's considerable renewable energy potential. Water security was also addressed through Project Him Sarovar, an initiative under which 40 water bodies have been developed across 40 villages. Aligned with Mission Amrit Sarovar, this project aims to tackle Ladakh's arid, high-altitude climatic challenges through local water conservation efforts.

Preserving Ancient Heritage

Further enriching Ladakh's cultural landscape, the Prime Minister inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh. This park is designed to protect Ladakh’s ancient rock carvings and raise awareness about the region's rich archaeological heritage. The project is anticipated to enhance Leh's cultural tourism appeal while safeguarding fragile historical sites from environmental degradation and unregulated human activity.

“Today, another chapter is being added to Ladakh’s progress and development. I am pleased to be a part of this occasion through technology,” PM Modi stated during the virtual inauguration.

These announcements underscore the Centre's continued focus on infrastructure development in Ladakh, where unique geographical challenges, sparse population, and strategic importance make connectivity and essential utilities paramount. The new projects are poised to deliver tangible benefits to residents through improved travel, power, and water facilities, concurrently supporting tourism and the preservation of cultural heritage.
