Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently sent a special video message to his alma mater, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, celebrating its significant 75th anniversary. In his address, Pichai described his education at the esteemed institution as “truly a gift,” highlighting its profound impact on his life and professional journey.

Pichai’s message was filled with personal anecdotes, painting a vivid picture of his student days. He recalled numerous happy memories, from shared meals at 'Harry’s' and the vibrant 'Illu festival' to late-night study sessions in 'B308'. He emphasized the strong friendships forged with his 'wingmates' and the lasting impressions left by his professors.
A particularly poignant memory shared was meeting his wife, Anjali, on campus. He also recounted his initial forays into the world of technology, stating, “Campus is where I first learned to program, and where I had my very first few opportunities to use a computer, carrying floppy disks around campus.” These early experiences, he noted, were foundational to his career.

The Google CEO articulated how his time at IIT Kharagpur provided him with a unique perspective. “IIT Kharagpur played a formative role in shaping the lens through which I strive to make an impact on the world,” Pichai stated, underscoring the institute’s influence on his global vision and leadership.

He predicted that within the next five years, AI would transition from being primarily a lab phenomenon and tool for early adopters to becoming an integral part of everyday work across various sectors.
“When I look at the next 5 years, I see AI moving away from the lab and the early adopters and into the hands of people doing the work—the healthcare workers, the government officials, the farmers, developers and entrepreneurs,” Pichai observed.
He stressed the increasing importance of IIT Kharagpur in this technological evolution, urging the institute to continue its leadership in developing and applying technology to address pressing societal challenges. Pichai expressed great optimism for the future, fueled by the enthusiasm of current students, recalling his interactions with Gemini Student Ambassadors at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, where their passion for improving lives through technology was palpable.
