Petrol & Diesel Prices Steady on July 25: Delhi Over ₹100, Mumbai Above ₹110

· · 2 min read

Fuel prices across major Indian cities remained largely unchanged on July 25. Delhi recorded petrol at ₹102.12 and diesel at ₹95.20 per litre, while Mumbai saw petrol at ₹111.21 and diesel at ₹97.83 per litre.

Fuel prices across India saw little change on July 25, maintaining stability since a hike on May 25 by state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Despite recent fluctuations in global crude oil markets, retail rates at the pump held firm for consumers in major metropolitan areas.

Key City Fuel Prices on July 25

In the capital city, Delhi, petrol continued to be priced above the significant ₹100 mark at ₹102.12 per litre, with diesel retailing at ₹95.20 per litre. Mumbai residents also experienced petrol prices exceeding ₹110, settling at ₹111.21 per litre, while diesel was sold at ₹97.83 per litre.

Other major Indian cities also reported stable fuel costs. Hyderabad saw petrol at ₹115.73 and diesel at ₹103.82. Kolkata's rates were ₹113.50 for petrol and ₹99.82 for diesel. In Bengaluru, petrol cost ₹111.25 and diesel was ₹99.14. Chennai recorded petrol at ₹109.10 and diesel at ₹100.92 per litre.

Global Factors Influencing Fuel Costs

The stability in domestic fuel prices comes even as international oil markets observed some volatility. Brent crude oil prices recently surged to $100.69 per barrel, touching highs of $102 earlier in the day. This increase, the highest in nearly two months, was primarily driven by escalating tensions in Iran, which sparked concerns over potential disruptions to the global energy supply, particularly regarding shipping via the Strait of Hormuz.

However, this recent surge remains below the late-April peak of over $120 per barrel when initial fears of a Hormuz closure first impacted global energy markets. The risk of supply disruptions continues to be a factor due to ongoing geopolitical developments.

Understanding India's Fuel Pricing Mechanism

Several critical factors determine the final retail price of petrol and diesel in India:

  • International Crude Oil Prices: As India heavily relies on crude oil imports, global prices are the most significant determinant.
  • Rupee-Dollar Exchange Rate: A weaker Indian Rupee against the US Dollar increases the cost of imported crude, subsequently affecting retail prices.
  • Government Taxes: Both central and state governments levy taxes, which constitute a substantial portion of the final price and explain the variation in rates across different states.
  • Transportation Costs: The expenses incurred in transporting fuel from refineries to distribution points also contribute to the retail price.

These combined elements create the complex pricing structure consumers encounter at the pump.
