· · 2 min read

Fuel prices across major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, remained largely unchanged on August 31. Petrol continues above ₹100 in Delhi and ₹110 in Mumbai, while diesel rates vary.

Petrol and diesel prices across India's major metropolitan areas remained largely stable on Monday, August 31, reflecting a period of steadiness after recent fluctuations tied to global crude oil markets.

In the capital, Delhi, petrol continues to be priced at ₹102.12 per litre, with diesel retailing at ₹95.20 per litre. Mumbai residents saw petrol at ₹111.21 per litre and diesel at ₹97.83 per litre, maintaining prices above the ₹110 and ₹97 marks respectively.

Other major cities also reported consistent rates. Chennai recorded petrol at ₹108.60 and diesel at ₹100.43 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol was ₹108.96 and diesel ₹100.65. Bengaluru's prices stood at ₹110.93 for petrol and ₹98.80 for diesel. Hyderabad registered the highest rates among the listed cities, with petrol at ₹117.15 and diesel at ₹104.85 per litre.

Factors Influencing India's Fuel Prices

The retail price of petrol and diesel at the pump in India is shaped by a complex interplay of global, economic, and domestic factors. The most significant determinant is the international price of crude oil, which serves as the fundamental raw material for both fuels.

Another crucial variable is the rupee-dollar exchange rate. Given India's substantial reliance on imported crude, a weakening rupee against the US dollar directly increases the cost of procurement, which can lead to higher retail fuel prices domestically.

Furthermore, both central and state governments levy various taxes, constituting a considerable portion of the final price. This taxation structure is the primary reason for the differing fuel rates across various states and cities. Additional factors, such as transportation costs and the prevailing demand-supply dynamics within specific regions, also contribute to the final price consumers pay.
