Following a devastating terror attack in April 2025 that claimed 26 lives, including 25 tourists, authorities in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, have rolled out a sophisticated QR code-based scanning system. This initiative is a cornerstone of broader efforts to tighten security, regulate tourism services, and restore visitor confidence in the scenic region.
Enhanced Verification and Transparency
The newly introduced QR code system facilitates real-time verification of tourists, local service providers, and businesses. By integrating this digital mechanism into daily operations, officials aim to curb unauthorized activities, improve transparency within the tourism sector, and ensure that only registered operators are working. The system links personal and Aadhaar details to local police stations, enabling security forces to quickly scan and verify individuals on the spot.
Local Support Amidst Lingering Challenges
Local tourism operators have largely welcomed the digital security upgrade. Basheer Ahmed, a pony operator in Pahalgam, expressed his support, stating that the QR system prevents illegal operations and ensures fairness for registered workers. Gulzar Ahmad Wani, Vice President of Tourist Taxi Stand No. 2, echoed this sentiment, highlighting its role in regulating services and preventing external interference.
However, the aftermath of the attack continues to impact livelihoods. With popular tourist destinations like Baisaran and Chandanwari remaining closed due to security concerns, many locals dependent on tourism are facing significant losses. Operators have appealed to the Lieutenant Governor and the Central Government to reopen these crucial spots to revive tourist footfall, which has seen a decline across Jammu & Kashmir.
Broader Security Reinforcements
Beyond the QR code system, the J&K administration has implemented a series of comprehensive security measures over the past year. These include increased police deployment, intensified random checks, and stepped-up patrolling in and around major tourist hubs, particularly in South Kashmir. Nearly 50 tourist locations were initially shut down as a precautionary measure, with many gradually reopening after thorough security audits.
Surveillance and monitoring systems have also been strengthened, featuring more checkpoints and closer tracking of movement in sensitive areas. During major events such as the Amarnath Yatra, additional precautions like declaring routes as “no-fly zones” and banning drones have been introduced to mitigate aerial threats, underscoring the administration’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all visitors.
