Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, affectionately known as D. Y. Patil, a recipient of the Padma Shri and a former Governor, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90. He breathed his last at his residence in Kolhapur following a prolonged illness. Patil Group, which today encompasses over 150 educational institutions. This network includes universities, medical colleges, engineering institutes, business schools, and hospitals, collectively educating thousands of students annually.
Patil's most significant contribution was democratizing access to quality higher education during a period when opportunities for professional studies in India were limited. Under his leadership, the D. Y. Patil institutions became synonymous with excellence in fields such as medicine, engineering, management, pharmacy, and healthcare. His educational footprint expanded across major cities like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, and Kolhapur, solidifying Maharashtra's reputation as a premier hub for higher education. Before dedicating himself fully to education, D. Y. Patil had a distinguished career in politics and public life. He served as a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. His public service continued at a constitutional level when he was appointed Governor of Tripura in 2009. He subsequently served as Governor of Bihar from 2013 to 2014 and also held additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal for a brief period. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also shared his deep sorrow, stating that Patil's journey from an ordinary worker to holding important constitutional positions was remarkable.
