Pradeep Kannan, once an operations head at Oracle India, found his life taking an unexpected turn after a layoff. Instead of seeking another corporate role, he ventured into the food business, successfully creating "The Falooda Shop," a dessert chain now valued at ₹9 crore.
The Leap to Entrepreneurship
In 2019, Kannan, then 33, made the significant decision to leave his job in Bengaluru, where he reportedly earned around ₹1 lakh a month. He returned to his hometown of Karur, Tamil Nadu, and, with his wife, invested nearly ₹6 lakh from their savings to open a small 10x10-foot falooda and ice cream outlet near Gandhigram.
Lessons from Previous Ventures
This wasn't Kannan's first foray into the food industry. He had previously launched "Lets Kulfi" in Bengaluru, a kulfi business that initially showed promise but faced setbacks, including an outlet closure due to road expansion. Managing it alongside his full-time corporate job proved unsustainable, eventually leading to its closure. However, this experience provided invaluable insights into critical aspects like location selection, operational management, maintaining quality, and customer engagement.
Standardization Fuels Growth
Learning from past challenges, Kannan focused on developing a highly structured business model for The Falooda Shop. He identified a common problem in the falooda market—inconsistent taste, presentation, and quality—and addressed it by implementing standardized recipes and operating procedures. This strategy proved crucial for expansion through franchising, with the first franchise outlet reportedly opening in Karur in 2020. The company provides comprehensive support to its franchisees, covering store setup, raw materials, employee training, and standard operating procedures.
Expanding Footprint Across India and Beyond
Starting from a single kiosk, The Falooda Shop has rapidly grown to over 20 outlets across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, other Indian states, and has even established a presence in Dubai. The brand is also actively expanding into North India, with a new outlet slated to open in Gurugram. Beyond traditional falooda and ice cream, their product range now includes various beverages, desserts, and an innovative ready-to-eat canned falooda product. The business reported an annual revenue of over ₹9 crore in 2025, and Kannan is further diversifying by working on a direct-to-consumer ice cream brand.
