India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), already a dominant force in digital transactions, is reportedly on the verge of introducing a significant new feature: offline 'tap and pay' capability for Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminals. This innovation aims to enable low-value payments even when both the user's smartphone and the merchant's payment device lack internet connectivity.
Seamless Offline Payments at PoS
According to a news report from Business Standard, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a new system that will allow users to make UPI payments by simply tapping their NFC-enabled phones on a compatible PoS terminal. This experience would mirror the contactless payments currently made with credit or debit cards, providing a quick and convenient transaction method.
The report suggests that NPCI is expected to begin certifying PoS devices from major manufacturers within the current calendar year, paving the way for wider adoption. While NPCI has not yet officially commented on these developments, the potential impact on digital inclusion, especially in areas with unreliable network access, is substantial.
Expanding on Existing Offline Capabilities
This upcoming feature builds upon existing offline capabilities within the UPI ecosystem. Since its introduction in 2023, UPI LITE X has allowed users to perform offline transactions, where neither the sender nor the receiver requires an active network connection. UPI LITE X, currently supported on Android devices, facilitates payments up to ₹500 by debiting funds from an on-device LITE wallet and crediting them in real-time to the receiver's LITE wallet, all via NFC.
What's New with PoS Integration?
The reported new capability specifically extends this offline functionality to merchant PoS terminals, enhancing convenience for both consumers and businesses. A key difference highlighted is the increased transaction limit, which is expected to be up to ₹2,000. In scenarios where there's no internet, the PoS terminal would capture the transaction authorization data and securely transmit it for verification once network connectivity is restored.
This development underscores India's continuous push to innovate its digital payment infrastructure, aiming for greater accessibility and resilience across diverse operational environments, from bustling city markets to remote villages.
