The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) made a strong entry into the public market today, with its shares rising by 5.21% to Rs 1,878 in early trading. This robust performance propelled the firm's market capitalization to an impressive Rs 4.60 lakh crore on the BSE.

NSE shares were officially listed at Rs 1,800 per share on Thursday, marking a premium of 0.84% over its initial public offering (IPO) price of Rs 1,785 per share. The exchange had initially planned to sell approximately 6% of its total equity capital in the IPO but reduced the stake on offer to about 5.5% after some shareholders opted out of selling their stakes at the lower price.

Impact on Key Shareholders

The listing of NSE had a ripple effect on several prominent financial institutions that held stakes in the exchange. State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda, GIC Re, and New India Assurance were among the listed entities that participated in the NSE IPO by selling a portion of their holdings.

  • State Bank of India (SBI): SBI sold roughly 2.48 crore shares of NSE during the IPO. Its shares traded flat today at Rs 985.60, maintaining a market capitalization of Rs 9.09 lakh crore.
  • Bank of Baroda: This public sector bank offloaded nearly 1.10 crore shares in the stake sale. Bank of Baroda's shares were down 1% to Rs 234.70, with its market cap standing at Rs 1.21 lakh crore.
  • General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re): GIC Re sold approximately 1.07 crore shares in the IPO. Its stock slipped 1% to Rs 340.90, bringing its market cap to Rs 59,807 crore.
  • New India Assurance: Shares of New India Assurance declined 4% to Rs 183.80 on the BSE following the NSE listing.
  • IFCI: IFCI, which holds an indirect exposure to NSE through Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL), saw its shares dip 4.39% to Rs 75.92. IFCI owns a 52.86% stake in SHCIL, making it a subsidiary, and SHCIL holds around a 4.44% equity stake in the NSE.

The successful market debut of NSE signals a significant moment for the Indian financial sector, with its performance closely watched by investors and market analysts alike.
