NSE Launches Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index for Animal Welfare-Focused Investors

· · 2 min read

NSE Indices has launched the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index, tracking companies committed to non-violence towards animals. This new benchmark supports ethical investment products for investors prioritizing animal welfare considerations.

NSE Indices, a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange, has introduced the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index, a new benchmark designed to identify and track companies that adhere to business practices aligned with the principle of non-violence towards animals. This initiative aims to provide a clear pathway for investors seeking ethical investment opportunities that integrate animal welfare into their portfolio construction.

The index includes 326 select companies from the broader Nifty 500 universe. These companies are chosen based on a rigorous screening framework that ensures they do not intentionally engage in activities harmful to animals during their business operations. The index's rebalancing occurs semi-annually in March and September, with the weight of each stock determined by its free-float market capitalization.

Ethical Investment Framework

The Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index was developed in collaboration with the Ahimsagain Foundation, utilizing its Ahimsa Investment Movement (AIM) framework. This framework meticulously evaluates listed companies on their products, services, and business practices to ascertain their compliance with Ahimsa, or non-violence, principles. Companies are categorized into 'green,' 'orange,' and 'red' groups based on their alignment, with only 'green' classified entities qualifying for inclusion in the index.

This new index not only serves as an investment benchmark but is also expected to foster the development of passive investment products, such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and index funds, centered on ethical investing. Its launch underscores the increasing global interest in thematic investing, particularly environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations, by specifically extending these principles to encompass animal welfare.

Key Constituents and Sector Representation

Among the top constituents of the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index by weightage are prominent companies such as Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Tata Consultancy Services, Maruti Suzuki India, NTPC, BSE, Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries, and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone. While the index currently does not feature any banking stocks, it boasts a diverse representation across various sectors, including leading information technology firms, automobile manufacturers, real estate developers, and other industries that meet the stringent eligibility criteria.

By offering a transparent and accessible benchmark for animal welfare-conscious investing, the Nifty 500 Ahimsa Index empowers investors to align their financial goals with their ethical values, promoting responsible corporate conduct and sustainable business practices.
