The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is reportedly on the verge of receiving crucial approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO). Sources indicate that this green light could come as early as next week, potentially on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Key Dates and IPO Scale
Following SEBI's approval, the NSE is expected to swiftly file an updated draft red herring prospectus (UDRHP) with the regulator. The exchange is aiming for a market listing on or before Friday, September 25, 2026, ahead of the Pitru Paksha (Shradh) period, which commences on September 26.
CNBC-TV18 has reported that the price band for the NSE IPO may be announced on September 11, 2026. This public offering is estimated to be around Rs 30,000 crore, positioning it as one of India's largest IPOs to date. At this expected size, shares are likely to be offered at approximately Rs 2,000 each.
Regulatory Hurdles Cleared
The path to the IPO has been cleared significantly by the Supreme Court of India's recent dismissal of SEBI's appeals in the long-standing NSE co-location and dark-fibre cases. This judicial decision has removed a major regulatory obstacle that had previously delayed the public issue plans for the nation's largest stock exchange.
The proposed IPO is structured entirely as an offer for sale, comprising up to 14.89 crore shares, which represents about 6 percent of the NSE's paid-up capital. Consequently, the proceeds from the issue will go directly to the selling shareholders rather than to the company itself.
Market Anticipation
The NSE's shares have been trading in the pre-IPO market at levels similar to the expected issue price. However, it is important to note that pre-IPO equity typically comes with a six-month lock-in period, and trading in these shares will freeze once the Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) is filed to launch the IPO.
As the financial community awaits official confirmation from SEBI, all eyes remain on the prospective approval next week, the subsequent filing of the updated prospectus, the anticipated price band announcement on September 11, and the targeted listing by September 25, 2026.
