The highly anticipated National Stock Exchange (NSE) initial public offering (IPO) is expected to debut with a significant premium, according to market expert Apurva Sheth. Sheth, who heads Market Perspectives and Research at SAMCO Securities, predicts that NSE shares could list at a premium ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 80, contingent on prevailing market conditions.
Institutional Demand to Drive NSE Share Price
Sheth highlights that a robust institutional demand is likely to be a key factor supporting the NSE's share performance post-listing. He anticipates a steady influx of interest from major institutional players, including mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds, and overseas investors, in the weeks following the IPO.
Despite potential early selling by retail investors, Sheth believes the chances of the NSE stock falling below its issue price are "relatively limited." He notes that the Indian market possesses the capacity to absorb the estimated Rs 7,700 to Rs 7,900 crore in potential selling from retail participants who might seek quick listing gains.
Strategic Approach for Long-Term Investors
For investors with a long-term perspective on NSE, Sheth strongly advises against immediate selling or buying solely based on the listing price. "If you want to buy NSE for the long term, I would ideally wait for at least a few trading sessions and allow the price to settle," he stated.
He recommends a strategy of staggered buying, encouraging investors to observe the stock's price action and gradually accumulate shares rather than attempting to time the market's exact bottom. This approach involves deploying capital progressively, especially if the price experiences an initial dip.
NSE IPO: A Market Landmark
The NSE IPO, valued at approximately Rs 22,560 crore, garnered substantial interest, concluding with a strong 5.71 times subscription. This made it one of India's most subscribed large-sized IPOs, receiving bids for over 50.58 crore shares against 8.86 crore shares on offer. Should the prevailing grey market premium (GMP) hold, the National Stock Exchange could become the world's eighth-largest listed exchange by market value, potentially reaching $47.5 billion.
