NSE Extends Equity Derivatives Trading by 10 Minutes to 3:40 PM Starting August 3

· · 2 min read

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) will extend trading hours for its equity derivatives segment by 10 minutes, moving the closing bell to 3:40 PM. This change, effective August 3, 2026, aims to align with the new Closing Auction Session in the cash market.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced an extension of trading hours for its equity derivatives segment, providing traders an additional 10 minutes of market activity. Effective August 3, 2026, the market's closing time will shift from the current 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM, while the opening time will remain unchanged at 9:15 AM.

Why the Extension? Aligning with Closing Auction Session

This adjustment in NSE trading hours is primarily designed to synchronize the derivatives market with the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS) in the cash market. The NSE plans to roll out the CAS framework on the same date, August 3, 2026, ensuring a cohesive market structure across segments.

The extension specifically applies to F&O (Futures & Options) segment securities that already have active derivative contracts, encompassing both index and stock derivatives.

Key Changes for Traders

Beyond the extended closing time, the NSE circular outlines several other modifications:

  • Modification End Time: The window for modifying existing orders will safely remain at 4:15 PM.
  • Price Band Reset: To maintain alignment between the cash and derivatives segments, the NSE will reset the price band for stock futures immediately before the Closing Auction Session commences. This new price band will be held static at ±3% of a freshly calculated reference price.
  • VWAP Calculation: The period for computing the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of trades will also be adjusted, now running from 15:10 hrs to 15:40 hrs.

These changes are expected to streamline operations and enhance market efficiency, particularly in how prices are determined and managed during the closing phases of trading.
