National Stock Exchange (NSE) Managing Director and CEO Ashish Chauhan has issued a stark warning to investors regarding the growing risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI). Chauhan specifically highlighted the proliferation of AI-generated fake videos and fraudulent websites designed to deceive individuals seeking stock market advice.
Verifying Information is Crucial
Speaking in an exclusive interaction, Chauhan recounted a personal experience from approximately three years ago when a deepfake video of him was circulated on Facebook. This video falsely encouraged viewers to join a WhatsApp group for stock tips, illustrating the pervasive nature of such scams even then.
“The difference between what is truth and untruth is going to be kind of mixed up now,” Chauhan stated, urging investors to exercise extreme caution. He advised the public to rely exclusively on highly reliable and trusted sources for financial information.
NSE's Stance on AI in Core Operations
Chauhan clarified that the NSE currently refrains from utilizing AI in critical areas such as trading, clearing, risk management, or settlement. This decision stems from the technology's present "tendency to hallucinate a lot," meaning AI can generate inaccurate or fabricated information, which is unacceptable in sensitive financial operations.
However, AI is being strategically employed in other capacities within the exchange, including:
- Software programming
- Legal case studies
- Identifying market trends for surveillance and regulatory purposes
Chauhan anticipates that as AI technology matures and becomes more robust, its application will expand into further areas, potentially impacting transaction processing, analytics, and order placement within the stock markets.
Investor Protection: Key Recommendations
To safeguard against AI-driven financial fraud, the NSE chief offered several key recommendations for investors:
- Be Skeptical of Videos: Do not blindly trust videos, especially those offering financial advice, as they can be easily faked using AI.
- Verify Broker Websites: Always cross-reference broker websites with the official Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) website to ensure their legitimacy. Fake websites designed to mimic legitimate brokers are increasingly common.
- Confirm Information Sources: Independently verify the origin of any information that purports to come from exchanges, brokers, or other financial entities.
Chauhan underscored the importance of diligent verification, emphasizing that investor protection hinges on a proactive and skeptical approach to digital information in the age of advanced AI.
