Ashishkumar Chauhan, Managing Director and CEO of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to diversify the exchange's revenue streams, moving beyond its traditional reliance on equity and derivatives markets. This ambitious plan focuses on expanding into new product segments, leveraging technology, and fostering deeper participation across the financial ecosystem.
Expanding Product Portfolio for Growth
Chauhan highlighted several new products and segments crucial for NSE's next growth phase. These include electricity futures, which promise better price discovery in the power market, and electronic gold receipts (EGRs), designed to enhance transparency and efficiency in the gold market while enabling a wider ecosystem of related products.
The exchange also received approval from SEBI on September 30, 2026, to launch Corporate Bond Index Futures, signaling a strategic move into the bond ecosystem. Other areas of interest encompass commodity and energy products, and various bond market opportunities.
Beyond Market Share: Efficiency and Transparency
When discussing leadership, Chauhan emphasized that NSE's objective extends beyond mere market share or trading volumes. The focus remains on providing markets that are efficient, fair, transparent, orderly, and cost-effective. He acknowledged the significant regulatory changes in the derivatives market, noting the exchange's successful adaptation with activities now spread across various instruments, including monthly options and futures.
Building Diverse Revenue Streams
Diversification is a core pillar of NSE's strategy. While equity derivatives will remain vital, the goal is to ensure growth is not dependent on a limited number of offerings. The exchange is actively cultivating multiple revenue streams across:
- Commodities and Energy
- Bonds
- Indices
- Market Data
- Technology-led Services
Chauhan anticipates that areas such as commodities and data monetization will evolve into significant, standalone revenue contributors over time. Furthermore, the underlying equity and cash markets are expected to see continued growth, driven by the financialization of savings, an expanding investor base, and increasing digital adoption in India.
NSE's Five-Year Vision: A One-Stop Financial Hub
Looking ahead five years, Chauhan envisions the NSE transforming from primarily an equity and derivatives exchange into a genuine "one-stop shop." This future NSE will offer deep liquidity across a multitude of asset classes, supported by robust technology, strong risk management frameworks, and advanced surveillance infrastructure. The aim is to create deeper and more efficient markets across all products.
