· · 2 min read

India's National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE will suspend all trading on Monday, September 14, in observance of Ganesh Chaturthi. Equity, derivatives, and currency segments will resume on Tuesday, September 15.

Indian stock markets, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE, will remain closed on Monday, September 14, 2026. This market holiday is observed annually for Ganesh Chaturthi, a significant Hindu festival.

Trading Suspension Across Segments

The suspension of trading will affect various market segments. Both equity and equity derivatives trading will be halted for the day. Additionally, other key segments such as currency derivatives, NDS-RST (Negotiated Dealing System – Reporting and Settlement System for Corporate Bonds), and Tri-Party Repo will also observe the holiday.

All trading activities across these segments are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, following the regular market hours.

Context of the Market Holiday

This holiday follows a trading session on Friday that saw domestic benchmark indices close lower, despite recovering some of their intraday losses. The BSE Sensex declined by 120.83 points, or 0.16 percent, to settle at 74,781.76. The NSE Nifty index also saw a fall of 79.70 points, or 0.34 percent, closing at 23,398.10.

However, both indices demonstrated resilience by significantly rebounding from their daily lows. The Sensex recovered 621.60 points from its intraday low of 74,160.16, while the Nifty climbed 166.70 points from its day's low of 23,231.40.

Among the Nifty constituents, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd and HDFC Bank Ltd were noted as top gainers, contrasting with JSW Steel Ltd and Hindalco Industries Ltd, which were among the biggest laggards. Sectorally, Nifty Realty and Nifty Metal faced pressure, while Nifty IT and Nifty Private Bank sectors offered some support to the broader market before the long weekend.
