Noida Police: Violent Protests Orchestrated via WhatsApp, Social Media

· · 2 min read

Noida police revealed that recent violent protests over low wages were systematically coordinated using WhatsApp groups and social media platforms. Authorities have arrested approximately 400 individuals, indicating an organized effort behind the unrest.

Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh announced that a thorough investigation into the recent violent protests in Noida has uncovered evidence of systematic coordination through social media and WhatsApp. Contrary to appearing spontaneous, the demonstrations over low wages were a tech-driven operation involving an organized group.

Digital Mobilization and Concealment Tactics

Commissioner Singh stated that an organized group was actively instigating workers, systematically pushing forward the protests. The method involved rapid digital mobilization, with numerous WhatsApp groups quickly established. Workers were reportedly added via QR codes to maintain anonymity.

Investigators also found that several fake Twitter handles and other social media accounts were created in the days leading up to the unrest. An audio clip circulated on WhatsApp urged protesters to gather and target police personnel, while Instagram group chats encouraged participants to carry chili powder for use against police during potential lathi charges. Senior police officials are actively investigating these communications.

Evidence of Planning and External Links

Police have gathered multiple CCTV clips showing masked youths vandalizing property and causing chaos. Masked protesters reportedly targeted CCTV cameras to destroy evidence and avoid identification. Authorities suspect a larger organized network and are investigating funding sources and possible external or cross-border links.

“We will trace the funding trail. If any external or cross-border links are found, appropriate action will follow,” Commissioner Singh affirmed, highlighting the seriousness of the ongoing investigation.

Government Response to Wage Concerns

Amidst the unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a significant hike in minimum wages across various worker categories, effective retrospectively from April 1. In Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, unskilled workers will now receive Rs 13,690 per month, an increase from Rs 11,313. Semi-skilled workers will earn Rs 15,059, and skilled workers will receive Rs 16,868.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged employers to ensure timely wage payments, fair overtime compensation, weekly offs, bonuses, and comprehensive social security benefits. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining safe working conditions, particularly for women workers, to prevent future disputes.
