The long-awaited extension of the Noida Metro Aqua Line from Sector-51 to Greater Noida West Sector-4 has received crucial approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB). This 7.5-kilometer corridor, estimated to cost around ₹1,000 crore, is set to drastically improve public transit access and alleviate chronic traffic congestion for hundreds of thousands of residents.
Connecting Noida to Greater Noida West
The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) presented the detailed proposal for the Aqua Line extension, which, upon approval, will be built over approximately two years. The extension aims to provide direct metro connectivity, easing daily commutes between Noida, Gaur Chowk, and Greater Noida West.
The proposed alignment is an extension of the existing Aqua Metro line and will include five new stations: Sector-61, Sector-70, Sector-122, Sector-123, and Greater Noida Sector-4 near Kisan Chowk. This route is strategically designed to serve a rapidly growing population, bringing public transport within easy reach of over half a million people residing in Greater Noida West.
Funding, Connectivity, and Impact
The project will be jointly funded through an equity model involving the central government, the Uttar Pradesh government, and the Noida and Greater Noida authorities. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of the Noida Metro Aqua Line extension for regional development.
Beyond local commuting, the new line is also expected to enhance regional connectivity. While separate from the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), the Aqua Line extension will facilitate last-mile access to the proposed Noida International Airport at Jewar by linking to the broader RRTS network at designated interchange points. This integration will create a more seamless public transport experience across Ghaziabad, Noida, Greater Noida, and Delhi.
Timeline and Regulatory Steps
NMRC officials estimate a construction timeline of roughly two years once all necessary approvals and clearances are secured. The PIB meeting was a critical step, evaluating the project's economic and technical viability, potential ridership, and overall social impact. Krishna Karunesh, NMRC Managing Director, expressed confidence in a favorable report, anticipating construction to commence soon after final endorsements.
This infrastructure development is projected to significantly cut travel times and reduce traffic bottlenecks, particularly benefiting the nearly three lakh residents of Greater Noida West. As a central government undertaking, NMRC will adhere to all statutory procedures under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), ensuring the project moves from proposal to reality with due regulatory oversight.
