The United Arab Emirates has introduced a new electronic entry permit, making travel significantly easier for residents of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This digital permit allows eligible individuals to enter the UAE directly, avoiding the need for traditional paper visa applications.
Who Qualifies for the UAE eVisa?
Foreign nationals holding a valid residency permit from any GCC country are eligible, provided they meet specific criteria. Applicants must have at least one year of remaining validity on their GCC residence permit and a passport valid for a minimum of six months. Additionally, their profession must fall under an approved list by UAE authorities, who verify this during the application process.
Required Documents for Application
- A valid passport.
- A copy of the GCC residence permit or ID, clearly showing the applicant's profession and residency validity.
- A recent passport-size photograph with a white background.
Depending on the individual case, additional documentation may be requested by the immigration authorities.
How to Apply for the Electronic Permit
The application process varies slightly based on the intended emirate of entry:
- For Dubai: Travellers should apply via the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai Smart Services portal. This involves registering as a new user, selecting the GCC Resident Entry Permit service, completing the online form, uploading the necessary documents, and paying the fee. The approved eVisa is then sent via email and must be secured before departure.
- For Other Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah): Applications are processed through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) portal.
Cost and Validity
The GCC resident entry permit costs Dh250, plus an additional 5% VAT. There may also be extra service charges depending on the application channel used. Once issued, the permit remains valid for 30 days and allows for a 30-day stay from the date of entry into the UAE. This stay can be extended once for another 30 days, subject to approval from the authorities.
Check Visa-on-Arrival Eligibility First
Before applying for the eVisa, prospective travellers should confirm if they already qualify for visa-on-arrival access, which the UAE extends to citizens of more than 80 countries. Those eligible for a visa-on-arrival do not require an eVisa. Eligibility can be verified through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
Alternative: Applying via Travel Agency
GCC residents also retain the option of applying for a UAE visit visa through an authorised travel agency. These agencies can assist with the paperwork and sponsorship requirements in accordance with UAE regulations.
