NEET-UG 2026 Cancelled; CBI to Probe Paper Leak, Re-Exam Ordered

· · 2 min read

The National Testing Agency has cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination, impacting over 22 lakh medical aspirants. A CBI probe has been ordered into alleged paper leak irregularities, and the exam held on May 3 will be re-conducted.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination following widespread allegations of a paper leak. This significant decision affects over 22 lakh medical aspirants across India, with the NTA confirming that the exam, originally held on May 3, will be re-conducted at a later date.

CBI Investigation Initiated

In response to the mounting controversy and student protests, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe has been ordered into the alleged irregularities. The NTA's announcement on Monday, May 12, 2026, comes after days of intense scrutiny and political pressure regarding the integrity of the country's most crucial medical entrance examination.

Allegations surfaced four days after the exam, on May 8, suggesting that question papers, including all 90 Biology and all 45 Chemistry questions, had been circulated as "guess papers" before the examination. The NTA had initially referred the matter to central agencies for independent verification, which has now culminated in the full-scale CBI investigation.

Scope of the Probe and Future Steps

The CBI investigation is expected to meticulously trace the full chain of the alleged leak. Early reports suggest its origins might be a printing press in Jaipur, with the leaked papers reportedly circulating across at least six cities, including Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Dehradun, and various locations in Kerala.

While the NTA has not yet specified a new date for the re-examination, it has reassured students and the public of its commitment to ensuring a fair, secure, and credible conduct of national examinations. Further details regarding the re-examination schedule are anticipated soon.

Student and Political Reaction

The cancellation follows days of mounting political pressure and widespread concern among students and parents over the fairness and transparency of the examination process. Student organizations had organized protests demanding accountability and a re-examination, highlighting the high stakes involved in securing admission to medical colleges.
