The Rajasthan Special Operations Group (SOG) initiated a probe days after the exam was conducted on May 3. While the National Testing Agency (NTA) has not yet issued official statements regarding a re-examination, the ongoing investigation has raised serious questions about the integrity of the highly competitive medical entrance test.
Understanding the "Guess Paper" Phenomenon
In India's intense competitive exam landscape, "guess papers" are common. Coaching centers, private tutors, and study networks routinely create these papers, which are typically compiled based on analysis of previous years' question trends, NCERT chapter weightages, and probable question banks. When a few questions match the actual exam, it's often attributed to strong pattern recognition rather than illicit access.
However, the current situation with NEET-UG 2026 has crossed into a grey area. Experts are highly skeptical that over 100 matching questions could be a mere coincidence. An academic coordinator from a Delhi NCR medical entrance coaching center stated, "The problem starts when a very high number of questions match the actual paper. Then even genuine coaching centers come under suspicion." Another expert was blunt, calling such a high overlap "a big coincidence, and very improbable."
The Investigation and NTA's Stance
Reports indicate that the Rajasthan SOG is scrutinizing a collection of over 400 questions circulated prior to the NEET-UG 2026 exam. Of these, more than 100 are alleged to have closely resembled the official paper. Despite these findings, authorities have not officially labeled it a "paper leak," a distinction that carries significant weight.
The NTA has maintained that the examination was conducted under stringent security protocols. However, it acknowledged receiving inputs about suspected malpractice on May 7 and subsequently escalated the matter to central agencies on May 8 for independent verification. This proactive step underscores the seriousness with which the allegations are being treated.
Shadows of the 2024 Controversy
The current situation inevitably brings to mind the NEET-UG 2024 controversy, which saw widespread allegations of paper leaks, inflated scores, and various irregularities, sparking national outrage. Investigations by the Bihar Police in 2024 uncovered organized rackets where aspirants allegedly paid substantial sums for advance access to question papers. The Supreme Court later acknowledged that some students had indeed benefited from leaked papers, although the NTA refrained from declaring the entire examination compromised.
The lingering impact of the 2024 events means that any hint of malpractice in 2026 is met with heightened scrutiny and public concern, emphasizing the need for a thorough and transparent investigation into the latest allegations.
