Nadir Godrej: National Unity Crucial for India's Economic Growth

· · 2 min read

Godrej Industries Group Chairperson Nadir Godrej asserted that national unity is vital for India's economic progress, warning that social division acts as a "tax" on growth. He urged both government and industry to foster inclusivity to attract investment.

Nadir Godrej, the esteemed Chairperson of Godrej Industries Group, has underscored the critical importance of national unity for India's sustained economic growth. Speaking at a book launch in Mumbai in 2022, Godrej emphasized that social division poses a significant impediment to the nation's economic momentum, deterring both global corporations and domestic investors who seek stability.

Unity as an Economic Imperative

Godrej articulated a clear link between social cohesion and economic prosperity, stating, “I think we need to try and unify the country and stop dividing the country. I think that is important and I am sure the government also recognises the economic growth requires that.” His core premise is that internal discord effectively imposes a 'tax' on economic progress, as capital tends to shy away from nations plagued by polarization, communal tensions, or policy unpredictability.

He expressed optimism that political leaders understand the necessity of maintaining internal peace to achieve ambitious GDP targets. However, Godrej also stressed that the responsibility extends beyond the government.

Industry's Role in Fostering Inclusivity

During his remarks, Godrej explicitly noted that the private industry must also play an active role in promoting social inclusivity. He believes that corporate boards should proactively champion inclusive hiring practices and ensure that minority and marginalized communities are actively integrated into the formalized workforce. This corporate commitment to unity and inclusion, he argued, is essential for a stable and attractive investment environment.
