N. Chandrasekaran, the Executive Chairman of Tata Sons, has seen his total remuneration climb to an unprecedented ₹685 crore over the past five financial years, a figure prominently featured in the company's recently released annual report for FY26. This substantial payout positions Chandrasekaran among India's most highly compensated corporate leaders.
Record Annual Remuneration in FY26
For the financial year ending March 2026 (FY26), Chandrasekaran received a total remuneration of ₹158.66 crore. This marks his highest disclosed annual earnings since Tata Sons began detailing executive compensation in FY22, representing an increase from ₹155.81 crore in FY25.
His FY26 compensation package comprised:
- Salary and other benefits: ₹17.97 crore, an 18% increase from ₹15.12 crore in FY25.
- Profit-linked commission: ₹140.69 crore, remaining consistent with the previous year.
The consistent and significant profit-linked commission underscores its role as the primary component of his earnings, directly reflecting the company's robust profitability.
Five-Year Earning Trajectory
Over the five financial years culminating in FY26, Chandrasekaran's profit-linked commission has shown a steady upward trend:
- FY22: ₹94 crore
- FY23: ₹100 crore
- FY24: ₹121.5 crore
- FY25: ₹140.69 crore
- FY26: ₹140.69 crore
Similarly, his salary and other benefits also saw growth during this period, from ₹14.61 crore in FY22 to the current ₹17.97 crore in FY26.
Notably, Chandrasekaran's FY26 compensation accounted for approximately 80% of the total remuneration disbursed by Tata Sons to all its directors combined.
Among India's Top Corporate Earners
The FY26 remuneration places Chandrasekaran squarely among India's highest-paid corporate executives. For comparison, HCLTech CEO C. Vijayakumar earned around ₹176 crore in FY26, while Persistent Systems' Sandeep Kalra received approximately ₹148 crore in FY25. Hero MotoCorp Executive Chairman Pawan Munjal's remuneration for FY26 stood at ₹122 crore, making him the highest-paid executive in the Indian automotive sector.
Shareholder Approval and Board Developments
Chandrasekaran is set to face shareholders at Tata Sons' annual general meeting on August 18, 2026. Here, he will retire by rotation and seek approval to continue his tenure as a director. His current five-year term as chairman is scheduled to conclude in February 2027.
Other key executive remunerations included Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director Saurabh Agrawal, who earned ₹33.69 crore in FY26, with ₹26 crore attributed to commission. The remaining seven board members received only sitting fees, while Director Venu Srinivasan continued his practice of forgoing commission from the company.
Strong Financial Performance for Tata Group and Tata Sons
The annual report also showcased a strong financial year for the broader Tata Group. Group revenue increased by 7.8% to ₹16,24,030 crore in FY26, accompanied by a significant 51.9% surge in net profit to ₹1,70,525 crore. Chandrasekaran highlighted in the report that the group's revenue is 2.1 times and profits are 5.4 times their FY20 levels.
At the holding company level, Tata Sons reported a 9% rise in revenue to ₹42,000 crore and a 22% increase in profit, reaching ₹32,000 crore. The board has also recommended a dividend of ₹1,10,717 per share, a substantial increase from ₹64,900 in the previous year. If approved by shareholders, this would lead to a cash outflow of ₹4,474.58 crore.
