N. Chandrasekaran: AI is a "Profound Civilisational Shift" for Enterprise IT

· · 2 min read

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, in his FY26 shareholder letter, declared AI a "profound civilisational shift." He asserts that software companies, particularly TCS, are uniquely positioned to lead this transformation for enterprise IT.

AI: A Foundational Shift, Not a Threat to Software

N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, has articulated a compelling vision for artificial intelligence, describing it as a "profound civilisational shift." In his letter to shareholders as part of the FY26 annual report, Chandrasekaran directly addressed prevailing anxieties that large language models might sideline traditional software companies. "That has not been our experience, and it is not what I believe," he stated, emphasizing AI as the most significant opportunity yet for enterprise IT.

He elaborated that the true potential of AI cannot be unlocked merely by providing organizations with access to the technology. Enterprises require a fundamental restructuring of their data and seamless integration into complex IT systems that have evolved over decades. This intricate process, Chandrasekaran argues, is where companies with deep institutional knowledge excel.

TCS at the Forefront of AI Integration

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the conglomerate's largest entity and a bellwether for India's IT sector, is poised to capitalize on this transformation. Chandrasekaran highlighted TCS's extensive experience collaborating with clients on software development, maintenance, and change management, giving it an unparalleled understanding of customer contexts.

The company has already demonstrated significant progress, achieving an annualized AI revenue of $2.6 billion in Q1 FY27. Furthermore, TCS has announced its 1 GW HyperVault AI data center platform and forged strategic partnerships with industry leaders like OpenAI, Microsoft, AWS, and Anthropic. Chandrasekaran also noted TCS's robust operating margin of 25.0%, significantly outperforming competitors. Looking ahead, he projected that TCS could have as many AI agents as human employees within the next three years, signaling a deep integration of AI into its operational fabric.

India's Broader AI Ambition: The Full Stack Approach

Beyond enterprise IT, Chandrasekaran sees a wider opportunity for India to drive down the overall cost of intelligence. He revealed that across the Tata Group, efforts are underway to enable a complete AI stack. This ambitious initiative encompasses everything from the foundational silicon for computation and the data centers for hosting, to the enterprise systems for application, and finally, the physical platforms—including energy, mobility, and defense—where AI interfaces with the real world.

This holistic approach underscores Chandrasekaran's belief that India's technology industry, which historically built its global position by reliably and accountably deploying powerful new technologies within demanding institutions, is uniquely positioned to lead in this new era of AI.
