Travel costs for daily commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are set to increase as revised autorickshaw and black-and-yellow taxi fares come into effect from September 1, 2026. This marks the first fare adjustment in 18 months, approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA).
Revised Fare Structure
The MMRTA, chaired by the Maharashtra transport secretary, has implemented significant changes to both minimum and per-kilometre rates for both modes of transport:
- Autorickshaws: The minimum fare has risen from ₹26 to ₹27. The per-kilometre rate has also increased, moving from ₹17.14 to ₹18.22.
- Black-and-Yellow Taxis: The minimum fare for the initial 1.5 km has gone up from ₹31 to ₹33. The revised per-kilometre fare is now ₹21.90, an increase from the previous ₹20.66.
The previous fare hike for both taxis and autorickshaws was implemented on February 1, 2025.
Meter Recalibration Deadline
Taxi and autorickshaw drivers have been granted a three-month window to recalibrate their electronic fare meters to reflect the new rates. Drivers can collect the revised fares either after recalibrating their meters or by prominently displaying an RTO-approved fare table.
An RTO official confirmed that the deadline for meter recalibration is the end of November 2026. Drivers who fail to comply with this deadline may face penalties. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is home to a vast network of over 4.5 lakh autorickshaws and more than 50,000 black-and-yellow taxis, with the majority operating on compressed natural gas (CNG).
