MUMBAI – The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken stringent action against five food establishments in Mumbai, suspending their operating licenses following inspections that uncovered a range of severe violations. The crackdown, led by FDA chief Tukaram Mundhe, occurred within 24 hours, just ahead of the upcoming festive season, emphasizing the department's commitment to consumer safety.
Adulterated Ghee and Pest Infestations Found
One of the most significant actions was taken against Gurukripa Dairy Products in Malad East. Inspectors on September 21 found the premises allegedly preparing adulterated ghee by mixing refined sunflower oil, vanaspati, and branded ghee, which was then sold under the name 'Pooja Ghee'. The FDA seized approximately 2,464.05 kg of these adulterated and mislabeled products, valued at around Rs 15.15 lakh. Disturbingly, the inspection also revealed the presence of rats and cockroaches within the facility, alongside the seizure of two boiler machines and a khoya machine.
Unlicensed Operations and Poor Hygiene
In Versova, Gufran Seek Corner was ordered to cease operations immediately after the FDA discovered it was running without a valid food license or registration. The establishment also exhibited numerous deficiencies in food safety protocols, including inadequate drinking water testing, improper storage and segregation of food items, insufficient cleanliness of premises and equipment, lack of pest control, and missing medical examination records for food handlers. The eatery must rectify all deficiencies and obtain a proper license before resuming business.
Blood Stains, Grease, and Pests at Mahalaxmi Restaurant
The license for BJRS (Gallops) Restaurant in Mahalaxmi was suspended with immediate effect due to a litany of hygiene failures. FDA inspectors reported finding blood and ketchup stains from non-vegetarian food inside refrigerators, along with torn packaging for raw materials. The kitchen was noted for grease accumulation and damaged walls, while the drainage system lacked adequate covering. Cockroaches, ants, and waterlogging were also observed on the premises. Furthermore, the restaurant failed to provide records of annual medical examinations and vaccinations for its food handlers.
Further Action Against Bandra Establishments
Two other establishments in Bandra West, Dreamer Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. and Mirari, also faced immediate license suspensions. Inspections at Dreamer Hospitality revealed violations of food hygiene and health-related regulations, prompting further legal action by the FDA. Mirari was found to be in breach of food safety provisions outlined in 'Schedule 4', leading to its license suspension and ongoing legal proceedings.
