Mumbai Airport Prepares for Monsoon with Essential Shutdown
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai will temporarily suspend all flight operations for a six-hour period on May 7, 2026. This annual pre-monsoon maintenance exercise is scheduled to halt all arrivals and departures between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
During this critical period, both the primary runway (09/27) and the secondary runway (14/32) will be closed. This comprehensive shutdown is a standard procedure undertaken by the airport to ensure the safety, efficiency, and durability of its extensive airside infrastructure, which spans 1,033 acres.
Impact on Flights and Passenger Advice
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the airport operator, confirmed that the closure was planned well in advance to minimize inconvenience to travelers. Consultations with airlines and other stakeholders commenced nearly six months prior to the scheduled date, allowing airlines ample time to adjust their flight schedules accordingly.
Passengers with flights scheduled on May 7 are strongly advised to recheck their flight timings directly with their respective airlines. While adjustments have been made, verifying the latest status is crucial for smooth travel.
Importance of Airside Infrastructure Maintenance
The annual pre-monsoon maintenance is a vital part of CSMIA's monsoon contingency plan, designed to prepare the airport for Mumbai's typically intense rainy season. The work focuses on critical infrastructure elements to prevent disruptions and ensure operational continuity during adverse weather conditions.
The importance of robust maintenance is underscored by recent disruptions at the airport. In March, CSMIA experienced multiple cancellations, including 66 air traffic movements on March 8 and 107 on March 3, which affected hundreds of passengers and highlighted the need for proactive infrastructure management.
