Mizoram Fuel Prices Jump: Petrol Hits ₹102.11, Diesel ₹90.80 After ₹3 Hike

· · 2 min read

Petrol and diesel prices in Mizoram increased by ₹3 per litre on May 15, 2026, marking the first hike since March 2025. Aizawl now sees petrol at ₹102.11/litre and diesel at ₹90.80/litre, driven by rising global crude costs and a weaker rupee.

Residents across Mizoram are facing higher fuel costs as petrol and diesel prices were hiked by ₹3 per litre each, effective May 15, 2026. This adjustment marks the first increase in fuel rates since March 21, 2025, impacting daily expenses for commuters and businesses.

New Fuel Rates in Mizoram Cities

Following the nationwide revision by oil marketing companies, the retail prices in key Mizoram cities have been updated:

  • Aizawl: Petrol ₹102.11/litre, Diesel ₹90.80/litre
  • Lunglei: Petrol ₹102.11/litre, Diesel ₹90.80/litre
  • Champhai: Petrol ₹102.11/litre, Diesel ₹90.80/litre

These rates reflect the base price increase along with local taxes and transportation costs that vary by region.

Why the Price Hike Now?

The upward revision in petrol and diesel prices comes after a prolonged period of stability, which was largely attributed to state assembly elections. With the polling now concluded, the accumulated pressures from the international market are being passed on to consumers.

Global Crude Oil Prices and Geopolitical Tensions

Global crude oil prices have remained elevated in recent months. Significant disruptions to shipping routes in West Asia and ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to this surge. India, which imports a substantial portion of its crude oil, is highly susceptible to these international price swings.

Impact of a Weaker Rupee

Another critical factor influencing domestic fuel prices is the exchange rate between the Indian Rupee and the US Dollar. A weaker rupee makes crude oil imports more expensive, directly increasing the cost burden on state-owned oil marketing companies. These companies had reportedly been absorbing substantial under-recoveries before the current hike.

Government Taxes and Local Variations

Fuel prices in India are also significantly influenced by central and state government taxes, which often constitute more than half of the final retail price. This taxation structure, combined with varying transportation costs and local demand-supply dynamics, explains why prices differ from one city or state to another.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had previously indicated significant under-recoveries for oil marketing companies at prevailing international crude prices, underscoring the financial pressures that led to this latest price adjustment.
