Meta's Toxic AI Layoff Culture: Hires for Senior Role While Firing 8,000

· · 2 min read

Meta recently laid off 8,000 employees while simultaneously reaching out to former staff for senior roles, sparking accusations of a 'toxic' AI layoff culture. This move, aimed at accelerating AI investments, has drawn criticism for its impact on employee retention.

Meta has announced a significant round of layoffs, cutting approximately 8,000 jobs, or about 10% of its workforce, as the company intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence. This marks the second major wave of job reductions by the tech giant, following an announcement in April about planned layoffs and scrapping 6,000 open positions.

Criticism Mounts Over Hiring Practices Amidst Layoffs

The latest layoffs have ignited controversy, particularly after Zach Wilson, a former Meta engineer and founder of DataExpert.io, revealed a perplexing situation. Wilson stated that Meta contacted him for a principal role in the same week it decided to lay off thousands of employees.

"Meta reached out to interview me for a principal role the same week they decided to lay off 8,000 people!" Wilson wrote in a social media post, expressing his astonishment.

Wilson questioned the company's approach, arguing that many of the laid-off engineers could have filled open positions rather than Meta seeking external hires. He emphasized that he knew several experienced staff engineers who were let go, suggesting they would have been suitable for roles like the one he was approached for.

"Unbelievably Toxic" AI Layoff Culture

Wilson accused large technology companies, including Meta, of aggressively cutting staff only to rehire in strategic areas like AI. He criticized this practice, stating, "Whatever happened to employee retention? Why do companies expect us to be loyal to them if they don’t even try to retain us when they have hundreds of billions of dollars?"

He further commented on the evolving landscape of AI-driven restructuring across Silicon Valley, calling the culture "unbelievably toxic." Wilson highlighted the contradiction of expecting employees' dedication while maintaining a constant threat of job cuts.

Meta's Justification: Aggressive AI Investment

In a memo to employees, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that the layoffs were a necessary step as the company competes aggressively in the field of artificial intelligence. "AI is the most consequential technology of our lifetimes," Zuckerberg wrote, asserting that companies leading in this domain would define the next generation.

The company confirmed that these cuts would help offset substantial investments in AI and related infrastructure. Simultaneously, approximately 7,000 employees are reportedly being transitioned into AI-focused roles, with teams working on AI infrastructure, foundation models, and AI monetization being largely protected from the job reductions.

Zuckerberg concluded his memo by expressing gratitude to the departing employees, acknowledging their hard work and contributions to Meta's mission.
