Mercedes-Benz India has expanded its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) portfolio with the launch of the AMG E 53 Hybrid sedan. This new model marks the brand's first electrified AMG E-Class variant to debut in the Indian market, combining high-performance driving with enhanced efficiency.
Performance and Powertrain
The AMG E 53 Hybrid features a sophisticated powertrain that pairs a 3-litre six-cylinder engine with an electric motor. This combination delivers a formidable total system output of 430 kW (585 hp) and 750 Nm of torque. Utilizing the 'race start' function, the power output can temporarily increase to an impressive 450 kW (612 hp).
The performance sedan boasts a rapid acceleration, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The vehicle's 400-volt battery, with a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh, enables purely electric driving at speeds up to 140 km/h and offers an electric-only range of 100 km (WLTP).
Advanced Features and Design
The AMG E 53 Hybrid is equipped with an 11-kW onboard AC charger for convenient recharging. The battery, strategically placed below the boot floor, supports both plug-in charging and recuperation through regenerative braking. Drivers can select from six distinct drive modes, including 'Electric' and 'Battery Hold', to optimize performance or conserve battery life.
Key performance enhancements include AMG ride control suspension, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, and standard rear-axle steering for superior handling and stability. Aesthetically, the sedan stands out with an illuminated AMG grille, wider fenders, aggressive AMG body styling, quad tailpipes, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Customers can choose from six exterior paint options.
Interior Luxury and Technology
Inside, the AMG E 53 Hybrid offers a premium experience with AMG sports seats and an AMG-specific MBUX infotainment system. This system includes dedicated displays for performance metrics and hybrid operation. Audio enthusiasts will appreciate the 730W Burmester 4D surround sound system, which features Dolby Atmos for an immersive listening experience. Additional comfort features include front pull-out sun visors, rear sunblinds, and an electric rear windscreen roller blind.
Pricing and Availability in India
The performance edition of the Mercedes-Benz AMG E 53 Hybrid is priced at ₹1.45 crore (ex-showroom), while the racing trim is available for ₹1.48 crore (ex-showroom). Bookings for this completely built-up (CBU) model have already commenced, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz's 'powertrain-agnostic' strategy for the Indian market, allowing customers diverse choices.
