MCX Stock: Analysts Recommend Short-Term Profit Booking Amid Resistance

· · 3 min read

JM Financial Services advises short-term investors to book profits on MCX shares, citing strong technical resistance near Rs 3,400-3,500. While commodity trading volumes boost the stock, analysts see limited immediate upside, suggesting caution for a two-month horizon.

Analysts are advising short-term investors to consider booking profits on shares of Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (MCX), despite a recent surge in trading volumes. JM Financial Services, through its Associate Director of Derivatives Research Akshay Bhagwat, highlighted significant technical resistance that could cap immediate gains for the commodity derivatives stock.

MCX Rally Fueled by Commodity Volumes

The recent upward movement in MCX's stock has been primarily driven by robust trading activity in precious and industrial metals. As a major commodity derivatives exchange, MCX naturally benefits from increased volatility and participation in underlying commodities like gold, silver, and various industrial metals. This heightened interest translates into stronger sentiment for the stock, attracting investors seeking exposure to market-linked plays beyond traditional financial instruments.

Technical Resistance Limits Short-Term Upside

Despite the volume-led rally, Bhagwat pointed to a critical technical barrier for MCX. The stock had previously tested its all-time high zone near Rs 3,400 in May, only to correct sharply to approximately Rs 2,600. This pattern underscores the stock's sensitivity to resistance at elevated price levels.

Bhagwat specifically identified the range of Rs 3,400 to Rs 3,500 as a "special resistance zone." He expressed doubt that the stock would clear this band quickly, especially for traders operating with a short-term horizon of just a couple of months. For investors who bought around Rs 3,257 and see the stock near Rs 3,279, the advice for a two-month window is clear: "book profits."

Broader Market Weakness Adds Caution

The recommendation for short-term profit booking also comes against a backdrop of broader market fragility. Bhagwat noted weaknesses in benchmark indices, rising volatility, and a market increasingly characterized by selective profit booking. These conditions can exert tactical selling pressure on stocks like MCX, even if their fundamental business model remains strong due to trading activity.

Furthermore, a cooling trend in precious metals could temper some of the momentum that previously supported MCX. If commodity enthusiasm wanes and the stock approaches a historically difficult resistance zone, traders may find it prudent to secure gains rather than wait for a potentially delayed breakout.

Long-Term Outlook for MCX

While short-term caution is advised, MCX's volume-led business model may still keep the stock on the radar for long-term investors. However, for those with a limited two-month investment window, the immediate upside appears constrained. Bhagwat's assessment suggests a high probability of "temporary selling pressure or profit booking," justifying an exit at current levels for tactical traders.
