New Delhi – Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Vijay Goel has sharply criticized the functioning of Delhi’s Municipal Corporation (MCD) officers, alleging they are failing in their civic duties. Goel expressed dismay that elected representatives, including Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and corporators, are forced to actively pursue officials to get even basic public works completed.
Elected Representatives Forced to Plead
Goel highlighted a "bitter irony" where, despite the presence of government officers, essential civic tasks remain neglected. He stated that securing services such as garbage removal has become a significant accomplishment for local representatives. "What an irony that the MCD and government officers aren't doing their jobs, and the MPs, MLAs, and corporators are running around the streets and alleys, begging them to get any work done," Goel remarked.
He further elaborated that the struggle extends beyond waste management to critical infrastructure issues. Elected officials reportedly have to "plead" with officers regarding problems with drains, manholes, roads, sewers, electricity, and water supply. Often, even after such pleas, the work remains unfinished, leaving the public underserved.
Accountability Questioned Amidst Governance
The BJP leader specifically questioned the lack of accountability among MCD officials, asking why basic civic problems like accumulated garbage exist in the first place if officers are performing their roles diligently. "They don't even question why the garbage was there in the first place, despite these officers being around," he stated, emphasizing a systemic failure.
Goel's criticism is notable given that the BJP currently holds power in both the Delhi government and the civic body. The party assumed control of Delhi in 2025, ending the nearly 13-year tenure of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Arvind Kejriwal. His public statements underscore internal party concerns regarding the efficiency and responsiveness of the municipal administration under their watch.
The allegations raise significant questions about the effectiveness of Delhi's civic administration and the mechanisms of public service delivery in the capital.
