Mumbai, India – Maya Tata, the youngest daughter of Noel Tata and niece of industrialist Ratan Tata, is set to take a pivotal role in the Indian retail sector. She will lead the e-commerce marketing function for Westside, the flagship fashion retailer under the Tata Group's Trent Ltd.
A Strategic Appointment for Digital Growth
This appointment comes at a crucial time for Trent, which is rapidly expanding its footprint and prioritizing digital commerce as a core battleground for fashion retail. Maya Tata's experience in finance and digital retail is cited as a key factor in her selection to spearhead Westside's online initiatives.
Background and Experience
Born in Mumbai in 1989, Maya Tata pursued her education at the University of Warwick, followed by studies in business management and finance in London. Her career trajectory began under the mentorship of Ratan Tata himself, where she worked with Tata Capital's Tata Opportunities Fund. She later moved to Tata Digital, gaining valuable experience in digital commerce and online retail across platforms like Tata 1mg, BigBasket, Tata Neu, and Croma.
Following a restructuring at Tata Digital, Maya Tata explored opportunities within other Tata Group companies before being considered for her current role at Westside.
Westside's Importance to Trent
Westside is a significant contributor to Trent's overall growth strategy, currently accounting for approximately 40% of the company's revenue. The brand is poised to play a central role in Trent's ambitious omnichannel and global expansion plans. By the end of fiscal year 2026, Trent reported revenues of around ₹19,700 crore and operated 1,286 stores across 321 cities, encompassing brands such as Westside, Zudio, and Star Bazaar.
Trent aims to open approximately 50 new Westside stores annually as part of its omnichannel strategy, and the brand has already initiated international expansion into the UAE.
Family Legacy and Roles
Maya Tata's new role positions her alongside her siblings who also hold key positions within the Tata conglomerate. Her brother, Neville Tata, leads Star Bazaar, while her sister, Leah Tata, is involved in the Taj Hotels business, continuing the family's deep engagement with the diverse Tata Group enterprises.
