Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch a refreshed version of its popular compact SUV, the Brezza, in the second half of July. The upcoming facelift is expected to bring significant changes under the hood, most notably the introduction of a new turbo-petrol engine option.
New Engine Options to Boost Competitiveness
The updated Maruti Brezza will offer customers a choice of two petrol engines. Alongside the existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, Maruti Suzuki plans to integrate its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, currently utilized in models like the Fronx. This strategic move is anticipated to make the Brezza more competitive by allowing certain variants to qualify for a lower tax bracket.
Currently, the 1.5-litre engine places the Brezza in a higher Goods and Services Tax (GST) slab, attracting a 40% tax rate due to its displacement exceeding 1,200cc, as per GST 2.0 reforms effective from September 2025. By offering a sub-1,200cc turbo engine, Maruti aims to benefit from reduced taxation, potentially making the Brezza more affordable for consumers and enhancing its market appeal. The turbo-petrol unit is also expected to deliver improved performance, catering to buyers seeking a more spirited driving experience.
While diesel powertrains were discontinued across Maruti Suzuki's lineup in 2020, the existing 1.5-litre petrol engine will continue to be available. Furthermore, the CNG variant is also expected to remain a part of the Brezza portfolio. Reports suggest the CNG model might feature an underfloor tank arrangement, similar to the Victoris, which would free up boot space and enhance the vehicle's practicality.
Subtle Design Enhancements Expected
In terms of aesthetics, the Maruti Brezza facelift is projected to feature subtle design updates rather than a complete overhaul. The changes are likely to focus on the front and rear bumpers, with a redesigned grille and revised headlamp units contributing to a fresh look. Additionally, the fog lamp surrounds are expected to be reworked. Despite these modifications, the overall profile and silhouette of the SUV are anticipated to largely remain consistent with the current model, maintaining its recognizable road presence.
