New Penalties for Ride Cancellations

Driver-Initiated Cancellations
- Standard Cancellation: If a driver cancels a trip after accepting a booking, a penalty equivalent to 10% of the total fare, capped at ₹100, will be imposed. This amount is directly credited to the affected passenger's app account.
- Essential Destination Multiplier: For bookings destined for critical transit and medical hubs—specifically airports, railway stations, and hospitals—the driver cancellation penalty increases five-fold to 50% of the total fare.
- Pickup Delays: Should a driver fail to reach the designated pickup point within 10 minutes of the estimated arrival time, the booking will be marked as a driver cancellation. This triggers a ₹100 fine, or up to 50% of the fare for essential locations.
Passenger-Initiated Cancellations
To ensure fairness and prevent unwarranted disruptions for drivers, passengers who cancel an assigned ride without a valid reason will be charged 5% of the total fare, capped at ₹100. This amount will be credited directly to the driver's account.
Aggregator Responsibilities and Compliance
The new policy also outlines stringent operational standards for ride-hailing aggregators themselves, addressing vehicle breakdowns and platform non-compliance:
- City Breakdowns: If a cab experiences a breakdown within municipal limits, the aggregator company is mandated to deploy a replacement vehicle within 30 minutes.
- Intercity Journeys: For longer trips exceeding 100 km, replacement transport must arrive within 60 minutes, with no additional charge to the passenger beyond the originally agreed fare.
- Platform Compliance: Aggregator platforms that repeatedly fail to uphold passenger safety, enforce fare limits, or adhere to operational rules face substantial monetary penalties ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹1 crore, alongside potential license suspension.
- App Enhancements: Aggregators are now required to integrate explicit "essential rides" options within their mobile applications to accurately categorize trips to airports, railway hubs, and medical centers, facilitating the enforcement of the new penalty structure.
