Residents across Maharashtra will now pay significantly more for haircuts and grooming services. The state's barber community has increased prices by 20% for various services, with the revised rates taking effect from Saturday, June 6, 2026. This move, announced by the Maharashtra Nabhik Mahamandal, impacts a vast network of traditional barber shops statewide.
New Pricing Structure
Under the updated pricing, a standard haircut, previously more affordable, will now cost ₹180. Shaving services have been fixed at ₹120, while beard trimming will be charged at ₹150. Other common services such as head massages and hair washing have also seen increases, now priced at ₹180 and ₹120 respectively. Premium services like facials and hair spa treatments have also become costlier, starting at ₹700 and ₹600.
Why the Price Hike?
The decision to raise prices stems from a substantial increase in operational costs for barber shop owners. According to the Maharashtra Nabhik Mahamandal, the prices of essential consumables and salon supplies have surged in recent months. Products like creams, shampoos, oils, and razors, vital for daily operations, have become significantly more expensive. This rise is attributed to broader global economic uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the Iran-US conflict, which have impacted supply chains and raw material costs.
Mid-Term Revision
Typically, barber service rates in Maharashtra are reviewed and adjusted every two years, usually in January. However, the unprecedented spike in input costs compelled the association to implement a mid-term revision. Shyam Askarkar, a functionary of the Maharashtra Nabhik Mahamandal, stated, "Generally, we revise the rates in January after a gap of two years. However, this time we were compelled to revise them mid-term due to the sharp increase in the prices of consumables and other materials used in salons."
Impact on Consumers
The revised pricing is expected to affect customers across Maharashtra, a state home to an estimated one lakh (100,000) barber shops. The increase will likely be felt most acutely by middle-class and budget-conscious consumers who frequent neighborhood salons. The association clarified that these new rates primarily apply to traditional and regular barber shops. High-end and luxury salons, which often charge significantly higher prices (starting at ₹500 or more for a haircut), generally operate outside the purview of the Mahamandal's rate revisions. This marks one of the most significant price adjustments in the sector in recent years, reflecting the growing pressure of operating costs on small service businesses throughout the state.
