Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has publicly dismissed the growing attention on his personal profile, stating unequivocally that he is not a celebrity but a dedicated government officer carrying out his responsibilities. His remarks come as the FDA intensifies its efforts against food-safety violations across the state, bringing his work into the public spotlight.
Focus on Systems, Not Individuals
Speaking at a 'Meet the Press' event hosted by the Mumbai Press Club, Mundhe emphasized that public attention should not be centered on any single officer. He articulated a clear vision for effective governance, highlighting the critical role of robust systems and collective effort over individual prominence.
"I am no celebrity. I am absolutely the Joint Secretary and Commissioner, FDA Maharashtra. I am very clear about it," Mundhe stated, according to reports. He added that the department is actively working to strengthen its operational frameworks, ensuring that enforcement activities will continue effectively regardless of who holds the Commissioner's post. "The most important thing is that the system should work. The individual should not become the most important thing."
Commitment to Public Service and Food Safety
Mundhe reiterated that his primary objective as FDA Commissioner is to guarantee that the people of Maharashtra have access to safe food and to actively promote healthier dietary practices throughout the region. He expressed a singular, vested interest in serving the populace.
"I have a vested interest here to serve the people of Maharashtra and ensure safe food. That is my vested interest, if at all there is one. Rather, that is the only interest I have as the FDA Commissioner," he affirmed. He also committed the regulatory body to principles of fairness and transparency, including sharing details of inspections and enforcement actions with the public.
Addressing Transfer Speculation
The senior IAS officer, known for his frequent transfers throughout his career, was also questioned about the possibility of another reassignment. Mundhe maintained that such decisions rest solely with the competent authorities and are beyond his purview.
"I trust the government; hence I am still working. But you are asking the wrong person about my transfer. I am not the authority who decides transfers. The competent authority will decide," he explained.
Mundhe concluded by asserting that speculation regarding his posting would not divert him from his core responsibilities. He emphasized his commitment to working without personal interests, driven solely by the goal of public service. His comments underscore his steadfast focus on institutional reform, ensuring food safety, and dedicated public service, rather than succumbing to the personal attention generated by recent high-profile enforcement drives.
