L&T Powers 'Miniature Sun' Project: India's Role in Global Fusion Energy

Indian engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is a key contributor to ITER, the world's largest nuclear fusion experiment in France. L&T's advanced technology is vital for assembling the reactor, aiming to produce clean, limitless energy.

Cadarache, France – The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a monumental global collaboration to harness fusion energy, is nearing its commissioning stage in southern France. At the heart of this ambitious project, which seeks to replicate the Sun's energy-generating process on Earth, stands the significant contribution of Indian engineering conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

ITER, an initiative backed by seven major global economies including India, aims to develop a clean, limitless energy source. Unlike nuclear fission, fusion promises zero carbon emissions and no hazardous radioactive waste, making it a highly sought-after solution for future energy demands.

L&T's Critical Contributions to ITER

L&T has been deeply involved with the ITER project for over a decade, leveraging its extensive high-tech engineering expertise. The company's work is crucial for the construction and assembly of the massive fusion reactor, known as the Tokamak.

  • Vacuum Vessel Assembly: In 2024, L&T secured a key contract for the deployment of advanced technologies necessary for the assembly of ports and complex components within the Tokamak's Vacuum Vessel. This intricate work is essential for controlling the superheated plasma required for fusion.
  • Cryostat Manufacturing: A significant milestone was reached in 2020 when L&T manufactured and delivered the Cryostat, the largest component of the ITER reactor. This colossal stainless-steel high-vacuum pressure vessel weighs over 3,800 tonnes and acts as the Tokamak's thermal shield.
  • Pioneering Hardware Development: Beyond manufacturing, L&T actively supports ITER in developing state-of-the-art technology and pioneering hardware specifically designed for fusion systems, which will be installed inside the Tokamak's Vacuum Vessel.

The Promise of Fusion Energy

The global push for fusion reactors stems from their potential to solve pressing energy and environmental challenges. By replicating the energetic process that powers our Sun, scientists aim to create a sustainable energy source that is both abundant and environmentally benign.
