The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has unveiled plans to launch a revolutionary new trading platform, LSE 24, by the first half of 2027. This innovative venue is designed to offer near-continuous trading five days a week, Monday through Friday, catering to the evolving needs of global investors. The move will allow market participants to respond swiftly to international market-moving events, access deeper liquidity for longer periods, and manage portfolio risks beyond conventional trading hours.
Introducing LSE 24: A New Era of Trading
LSE 24 will operate distinctly from the London Stock Exchange's traditional Main Market, which will maintain its current operating hours. Built on the trusted financial market infrastructure of the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), the new platform is set to complement existing market structures by extending trading opportunities while upholding the resilience and integrity of regular trading sessions.
Launch Timeline and Asset Classes
- Client Testing: The LSE 24 platform is expected to be available for client testing by the end of 2026.
- Initial Launch: Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) will be the first asset class to trade on LSE 24 in the first half of 2027, pending necessary regulatory approvals.
ETPs were chosen as the initial focus due to London's established position as a leading international hub for these products and the strong global demand for instruments offering efficient access to worldwide markets. The platform is anticipated to combine elements of both a central limit order book and request-for-quote (RFQ) functionality, ensuring price transparency and on-demand liquidity, with future plans for expansion into equities.
Extended Trading Hours
LSE 24 will operate from 17:00 to 07:50 UK time, effectively covering the hours outside the Main Market's 08:00 to 16:30 schedule. A brief 30-minute pause will occur between 18:30 and 19:00 for essential end-of-day processes. This combined operational window across the two venues will facilitate trading activity across nearly the entire weekday, offering unprecedented flexibility.
Driving Digital and Automated Markets
The introduction of LSE 24 underscores the exchange's commitment to supporting increasingly digital and automated financial markets. Julia Hoggett, CEO of LSE plc and Head of Digital and Securities Markets, LSEG, emphasized that LSE 24 represents a significant step in market evolution, offering clients greater flexibility and fostering more connected global markets. She added that integrating with LSEG's digital markets infrastructure will promote deeper liquidity, greater efficiency, and broader participation, reinforcing London's role as a premier global financial center.
Embracing 'Agentic Trading'
A key feature of LSE 24 will be its enablement of secure, native connectivity for the next generation of agent-based trading capabilities, often referred to as 'agentic trading'. This will allow clients to interact with market data, order management, and execution workflows in highly automated and intuitive ways, all while operating within the robust governance and controls of a regulated market. This blend of extended access and agentic connectivity is designed to support the future of market participation as trading becomes more digital, automated, and globally integrated.
Role of the Digital Securities Depository
Subject to regulatory approvals, LSE 24 will leverage LSEG's Digital Securities Depository (DSD), which is currently under development. The DSD is envisioned to provide the foundational infrastructure for the digitization of issuance, settlement, and asset servicing. This will not only broaden access to LSE 24 but also support its expansion into additional asset classes over time, meeting client demand and enabling new functionalities across markets.
